5 Minute, 3 Ingredient Caramels {stove or microwave!}

When I was a wee child (i.e. 7 years old) I decided to microwave a bowl of sugar. For a minute. Because my mom was busy making dinner and the microwave and me were unattended. You can probably guess what happened. Yes, the smoke detector went off. Yes, I ended up burning my finger. And yes, I decided to do it again.


When my mom wasn’t watching. I put another cup of sugar in the microwave. 15 seconds at a time. Verdict? Plain sugar does not microwave well. Because the smoke alarm went off again.


I have lots of fun with the microwave trust me. Just read about my other experiences here. You will laugh guaranteed. Or else… Nothing. I can do nothing but offer you a plate of microwave caramels. Which means a lot.

I love caramel. A lot. I would put it in everything I could except it’s so dang hard to wash burnt sugar off of pans. And the fact that the sugar crystallizes half the time and I DO NOT STIR. Seriously, sugar? You couldn’t be anymore uncooperative?


I decided to revert back to my old sidekick. The Microwave. I figured plain sugar doesn’t work, why wouldn’t sugar mixed with stuff? So I mixed sugar, milk, butter together guess what? It totally worked.  Tastes just like you labored over the stove begging for it not to burn. Well, microwave, you finally proved to be good at something. 😀



-These microwave caramels are completely customizable.
-For chocolate caramels, mix in a 1/3 cup of chocolate right after the 5 minutes of microwaving are over.
-If you usually spice up your caramels (i.e. cayenne powder or something) you can add it in the beginning.
-I also like to add in 1/4 cup of honey in the beginning. I think it helps it not to crystallize.

    Enfin tu as réussie à faire tes caramels! Puis que t’essaie depuis l’âge de 7 ans! Il pareil très bien tes caramels, ça fait envie 😉

    That’s impressive you can make caramel in the microwave! It’s so difficult to get just right on the stove top- this is amazing! Pinning for Christmas ideas 🙂

      I know right? Now there’s no need to spend forever trying to make caramels! 😀

    How long does it take for it to harden?

      It depends, if you stick it into the refrigerator, it takes around 2 hours and if you leave it out at room temperature, it’ll take probably around 6 hours. I wish I could give you more exact numbers but I usually just stick them in the fridge overnight 😐

    I don’t know what I did wrong… But I followed the instructions, and put them in the fridge… When I came back four hours later, the butter had mostly separated so it is floating on top of a melty brown sugar liquid… Help!!!
